AsOne Ministries is a Christ-centered nonprofit committed to making disciples and creating sustainable solutions in education, enterprise, health and agriculture in rural, underserved communities across Uganda. The English/Literature Teacher is based in Luuka / Serere Community, Uganda and works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers and AsOne leadership. This is a full-time role (8 work hours) responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in English Language and Literature in English to secondary students (O-Level and/or A-Level) in line with the national curriculum and UNEB syllabus. Salary is not disclosed. The role equips students with reading, writing, comprehension, oral communication and critical/literary analysis skills for academic advancement and future careers within a Christ-centered learning environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare and deliver English Language and Literature in English lessons in line with national secondary curriculum and UNEB syllabus requirements
• Develop schemes of work, lesson plans and assessment schedules for all assigned classes (O-Level and/or A-Level)
• Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong grammar, composition, comprehension, oral communication and literary analysis skills
• Use varied methods including guided reading, creative writing, debates, drama and discussion-based analysis of set texts and poetry
• Set, administer and mark class tests, assignments, essays and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback
• Track learner performance and progress, identifying gaps and providing remedial support
• Prepare students for national examinations (UCE/UACE) and internal assessments, ensuring full syllabus coverage
• Guide students in study of prescribed literature set texts (novels, plays, poetry, short stories), oral literature and functional/creative writing skills
• Integrate values education, critical thinking and communication skills relevant to everyday life in line with MoES guidelines
• Organize and supervise reading programs, spelling/vocabulary drills and public speaking or debate sessions to strengthen language proficiency
• Guide students in correct use of grammar, punctuation, comprehension techniques and essay/composition writing structures
• Facilitate literary appreciation through class readings, drama performances, poetry recitals and creative writing clubs
• Coordinate with administration on procurement of set texts, readers, dictionaries and other language/literature resource materials
• Organize debates, drama festivals, storytelling competitions or literary exhibitions that reinforce classroom learning with real-world application
• Mentor students interested in language, communication, media, law and literature-related career paths including further studies
• Encourage participation in debate clubs, drama clubs, journalism/writing clubs, competitions, quizzes and academic exhibitions
• Provide guidance and extra tuition to students struggling with English Language or Literature concepts
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance and continuous assessment
• Contribute to budgeting and procurement for textbooks, set texts, readers, dictionaries and teaching aids
• Ensure proper care, maintenance and stock control of textbooks, set texts and instructional materials including library/reading corner resources
• Maintain an organized bank of past papers, model essays and revision aids
• Work collaboratively with Director of Studies and fellow teachers, participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings and school-wide events
• Collaborate on co-curricular activities such as debate, drama and public speaking programs; engage parents and local community in supporting reading culture and language development
• Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Education with English Language and Literature in English as teaching subjects, or a related field
• Minimum of 2 years' teaching experience at secondary school level, preferably teaching English Language and/or Literature
• Sound knowledge of national secondary English Language and Literature curriculum, UNEB syllabus and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines
• Strong command of grammar, composition, comprehension and literary analysis/criticism techniques
• Registered/licensed with relevant Ugandan teaching body where applicable (e.g., valid Teaching Practice Certificate/registration with MoES)
• Demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education
• Passionate about teaching and mentoring young people in language, reading and communication skills
• Patient, clear and skilled at breaking down complex grammatical or literary concepts
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, balancing lesson planning, marking of essays/compositions and co-curricular activities
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff and parents
• High level of integrity, responsibility and accountability for school resources; collaborative team player
• Strong command of English Language and Literature subject content across secondary curriculum
• Skilled in essay/composition marking, literary criticism and facilitation of debate, drama or oral presentation activities
• Competent in lesson planning, assessment design and academic record-keeping
• Basic proficiency in using technology and instructional aids; capable of fostering a reading culture and encouraging creative expression
