AsOne Ministries is a Christ-centered, non-profit organization investing in holistic development in rural, underserved communities across Uganda. The School Driver is responsible for the safe, reliable, and professional transportation of students, staff, and visitors using the school's coaster bus and van in Namutumba Community, Uganda. The role carries significant responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of children on board and for proper care, maintenance, and security of school vehicles. This is a full-time position (8 hours) reporting to the Head Teacher / Director of Operations. Salary not disclosed.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely drive the school coaster and van to transport students, staff, and visitors to and from school, home, field trips, sports events, church activities, and other authorized destinations
- Follow designated routes and schedules for daily student pick-up and drop-off, adjusting only with approval from Head Teacher or Director of Operations
- Drive at safe, controlled speeds at all times, strictly observing Uganda traffic laws, road signs, and school policy on child transportation
- Ensure all passengers, especially children, are seated safely and securely before moving and doors are properly closed and locked while in motion
- Assist children, especially younger or nursery-age learners, in safely boarding and alighting at each stop
- Maintain calm, disciplined order among passengers during transit and report behavioural concerns to relevant teacher or Director of Studies
- Never leave children unattended in the vehicle and conduct a full check after every trip to ensure no child is left behind
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of coaster and van, checking tyres, brakes, lights, mirrors, fuel, oil, water, and overall roadworthiness
- Keep interior and exterior of both vehicles clean, tidy, and presentable at all times
- Promptly report mechanical faults, damage, or safety concerns and ensure vehicles are not driven if unsafe
- Coordinate and schedule routine servicing, repairs, and maintenance per manufacturer schedule and school policy
- Ensure insurance, road licence, inspection stickers, and statutory documents are valid and up to date, flagging renewal deadlines
- Maintain accurate logbook recording mileage, fuel consumption, trips, and incidents for both vehicles
- Hold and maintain a valid driving permit in Classes D and D1 and ensure it remains valid throughout employment
- Maintain valid first aid kit and fire extinguisher in each vehicle and know how to use them in emergencies
- Respond calmly to breakdowns, accidents, or emergencies, prioritizing passenger safety and promptly notifying Director of Operations and parents/guardians
- Avoid mobile phone use or distractions while driving except hands-free emergency communication and never drive under influence
- Coordinate daily transport schedules with Head Teacher, Director of Operations, and teachers
- Communicate professionally with parents, guardians, and staff regarding timing, delays, or changes
- Assist with loading, transport, and unloading of school materials, supplies, or equipment as needed
- Support school trips, outreach programs, sports events, and other off-site activities
Qualifications, Skills and Requirements
- Minimum O-Level certificate (UCE); further training in defensive driving or vehicle mechanics is an added advantage
- Valid driving permit in Classes D and D1 covering school coaster and van with clean driving record
- Minimum of 3 years of professional driving experience, with proven experience driving coaster buses or similar passenger vehicles; experience transporting school children is highly desirable
- Working knowledge of Ugandan traffic laws, road safety regulations, and basic vehicle maintenance
- Calm, patient, and responsible disposition, especially when transporting children
- Strong sense of punctuality, discipline, and reliability
- Good knowledge of local roads, routes, and communities served by the school
- Basic mechanical knowledge to identify faults and carry out simple checks
- Calm under pressure with ability to handle emergencies or breakdowns responsibly
- High level of integrity, discretion, and professionalism regarding safety and wellbeing of children
