Senior Accountant

As a Senior Accountant, you will own accurate and timely financial recordkeeping, reporting, and reconciliations, while supporting audit readiness, tax compliance, and internal controls. You will provide guidance to junior colleagues and act as a point of contact for auditors, tax authorities, and banks. This is a full-time, fixed-term employee position with an expected duration of 9 months based in Gulu, Uganda. This is an individual contributor role focused on technical accounting depth. Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare journal entries, accruals, and prepayments in the accounting system with high accuracy.
- Ensure vendor bills and customer invoices are processed correctly and within agreed credit terms.
- Prepare full sets of financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements for external reporting and audit.
- Ensure financial reports are accurate, complete, and delivered on schedule.
- Review management reports to ensure financial integrity, including trend analysis and cost center and profit center reporting.
- Support decision-making through financial analysis and reporting.
- Ensure finance recordkeeping tasks follow established policies and provide guidance to junior colleagues on compliance.
- Review payroll for core team members and cloud team payouts, serving as point of contact for payroll questions and ensuring compliance with tax, labor, and industry regulations.
- Oversee preparation for audits, ensuring records are organized and acting as liaison between audit team and senior management; prepare working papers, calculations, and reconciliations.
- Manage tax obligations including corporation tax, payroll tax, withholding tax, and VAT and ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
- Collaborate with IT, operations, and compliance teams to ensure internal controls are integrated and support integrity of financial information.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, vendors, colleagues, and regulatory bodies.
- Apply budgeting principles to offer guidance on budget availability.
Qualifications, Skills and Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Professional accounting certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA, CIMA, or local equivalent) preferred.
- 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience, including financial reporting, reconciliations, and audit support.
- Deep understanding of periodic financial reporting and required account reconciliations.
- Proven ability to independently prepare full sets of financial statements to support external reporting and audit.
- Working knowledge of corporation tax, payroll tax, withholding tax, and VAT requirements.
- Deep understanding of accounting systems and tools, using advanced features and reconciliation or period-close tools regularly.
- Able to engage stakeholders across departments and external stakeholders such as banks, tax authorities, and auditors.
- Able to apply critical analysis to resolve complex issues independently.
- Business acumen and project management: able to independently lead multiple accounting projects.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with ERP platforms in multi-entity/multi-country environment, exposure to multi-jurisdiction payroll, experience mentoring junior colleagues.
